I Want To Be Like Jerry When I Grow Up

TV guide named Seinfeld the greatest television show of all time.  That's debatable, but I know that I watched every Seinfeld episode at least twice!  Like many others who were dedicated to the show throughout the 90's, I've quoted multiple one-line zingers from Kramer when reminiscing on the most hilarious episodes.

The humor was unforgettable, but I was also intrigued with Jerry's short lived relationships with a handful of beautiful women.  One that sticks out is the "friends with benefits" agreement Jerry and Elaine tried to pull off.

I Tried

As I watched episode after episode of Jerry and George talk about their broken relationships in a flippant way over coffee, I falsely learned that the value of a dating relationship is in the quantity and quality of sex rather than the quality and quantity of a deeply emotional, spiritual, and sexual connection with a woman in marriage.

So, I gave it my best shot. One night stands, short-lived and very superficial relationships, and an all-round selfish approach to dating characterized most of the relationships in my youth. Jerry and George could have talked for hours over coffee about some of my botched relationships.

Friends With Benefits Doesn't Work

In the end, Jerry and Elaine couldn't pull off their agreement to just be friends who happen to have sex every once and a while. Elaine's emotions got in the way of their intention to use each other for pure pleasure.

God designed sexual intimacy as a powerful means of procreation and unity in a committed marriage that seeks to give glory to God. It's a fantasy to think that sex outside of this design will ever bring fulfillment and happiness to our culture.

What Did The Culture Teach You?

It's hard to dispute that our culture has a powerful influence on the way we think and behave. This is especially true in relations to how our moral compass is formed as a young person. It's a healthy exercise to reflect on how culture has affected you growing up.  Think for a minute about how television and other media have influenced your outlook on sexuality as you have grown up.

What do you think? Here are the two questions, please comment below:

Q1: What TV shows did you watch most frequently growing up?

Q2: What "worldly" values, ideas and relationships from these TV shows most formed you?

The movies, shows, magazines, and music that is most popular today in the media teaches us that it is normal to have casual sexual relations without any attachments.  They try to throw humor and satisfaction into these wicked ways.

I have followed these hollow ways of living for many years.  I thought that I would feel the same joy and fulfillment that these actors and actresses always seemed to feel.  I learned the hard way that the reality of this style of living leads to other evils.  Instead of feeling good and proud about my past immoral sexual behavior I felt guilty, depressed, angry, violent, and malevolent towards my own family and closet of friends.

Even if we are aware of how much this hurts us when we involve ourselves in the similar sexual activities of the modern media it is extremely difficult to get out of the holes that are dug after the many years of habits formed.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11 tells about not surrounding ourselves with drunkards and sexually immoral people.   My habits did not change until I removed these kinds of people.  Also, my habits did not change until I removed and destroyed the shows, movies, books, magazines, and music that influenced me to lead a life of sexual immorality.

Of course the battle is not over with dealing with these past bad habits, but by reading God's Word and other books about the Lord, surrounding myself with like-minded followers of Jesus Christ, and being disciplined with keeping the worldly people out of my life contributes heavily to success in defeating these past evils.
